HAGGLE TIPS
To get down to it, here are the basic rules of haggling. Use them with vigilance and fairness. When
you are ready to haggle don't let any of the methods get to your head. Remember if you keep your
cool; it will only agitate the vendor into giving you a better deal.
• Know where to haggle. As mentioned earlier pick your battles. Bargain at a flea market, large
electronics shop (over things such as TV's/computers, etc - not wires/pre-recorded CD's, etc),
mom & pop stores, craft stores, any service orientated business. Do not try to bargain at grocery stores,
bus depots and the likes, it will only result in you looking cheap.
• The one way you can really succeed in the world of haggling is to research prices beforehand. Go from
store to store and compare prices, go online; check out auctions and whole seller prices - know what you
are dealing with. This information is extremely essential as it does give you a firm backing.
• Before you start to haggle, set a price for yourself - if this price is exceeded in the haggle battle, simply
say 'thank-you' and walk away. Most of the times the vendor will come after you and agree on your price.
• Keep your cool at all times. The second you become angry, you are no longer haggling but are arguing.
• Point out any imperfections in the product - it will get you a lower price.
• Make the vendor believe that if you get a good deal on the product at hand, that you will return in the
future.
• Do not claim you cannot afford the item. If you can't afford it; you shouldn't be trying to buy it.
• Cash works wonders - if you cannot agree on a price, take out cash, take the product and place the
cash in the vendors hand - 90% of the time you will walk away for the product with the price you wanted.
• If you want a really good deal, go to a shop when they are about to close, chances are they will agree
just to get you out of the store.
• Be polite when haggling. Remember, the vendor is out to make a profit also, and no, he did not insult
your mother.
• If you are having trouble agreeing on a price, tell the vendor that you are going to go to another store
and come back - this will scare them into making a deal with you.
• This one may sound ridiculous but when the vendor quotes a high price, look at him in astonishment.
For the most part he may feel that he has scared you and will back down on the price.
• Once you start haggling on an item, it is expected that you purchase it once you hit an agreement.
• Don't attach yourself to an item, always be prepared to leave empty handed.
Remember, in the end its all a game and the one who comes out the winner in the one
who played better. If you don't get a deal on something you want today go for it again tomorrow.
